The Pet Animals Act 1951 establishes a regulatory regime for “pet shops” under which local authorities (district and borough councils) are responsible for inspecting and licensing premises.. The PETS Act was passed in 2006, largely because of what’s seen as the failures to protect animals, and families with animals, in Hurricane Katrina. Changes that have been made appear in the content and are referenced with annotations. Pets visit hospitals and act as service animals, appearing in restaurants, campuses, and workplaces where they would have been prohibited as recently as ten years ago.
